Milan coach Paulo Fonseca insists the Rossoneri must defend differently from last season if they want to win and confirms Christian Pulisic can play as an attacking midfielder, although he can already rely on Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

Milan have just begun a pre-season tournée in the USA and Fonseca addressed the media before a friendly game against Manchester City in New York.

The Portuguese coach has replaced Stefano Pioli at San Siro, signing a two-year contract with an option for a further campaign.

“I can 100% guarantee that you’ll see an attacking Milan that dominate proceedings, win the ball high up the pitch and make their fans proud,” Fonseca said at a press conference, as quoted by Gazzetta.

Pulisic: ‘Tough to find something’ like Milan fans in the USA

The Portuguese coach was asked if Pulisic could be deployed as an attacking midfielder as well as a right winger this season. The American star already played as a No.10 in some games under Pioli last term.

“Pulisic can play as an N0.10 even if we already have Loftus-Cheek for that position,” said Fonseca.

“We’ll defend differently from last season. I don’t want to make comparisons, but it will be different. That’s where we must improve if we want to win.”

Fonseca had already said during his unveiling press conference that he wanted to prepare the team for a new defensive approach in 2024-25. Last season, Milan conceded 49 goals in 38 Serie A games.
