The Giallorossi confirmed the coach will not stay beyond the season, with Roma currently sitting seventh in Serie A and trailing Manchester United 6-2 after one leg in the Europa League semi-final.

Fonseca arrived in July 2019 and the 48-year-old helped La Lupa to fifth in Serie A and the round of 16 in the Europa League last season.

He has struggled to keep up with the top four in Serie A this term, but has helped the Giallorossi progress to the semi-finals of the Europa League.

“In these two years we have experienced ups and downs,” the coach told the club’s official website. “But I have always given my best for this club and for this city, which has welcomed me very well.

“I want to thank all Roma fans, the people who work with us at Trigoria, the players, those who have supported us on this path, in particular Dan and Ryan Friedkin for their continuous support since they arrived and Tiago Pinto, an excellent professional, to whom I wish you the best in your path with this club.

“We still have very important games to win this season and we will give our best, as always. Thank you, Roma.”
