Milan coach Paulo Fonseca openly admits the Rossoneri’s main midfield target is Youssouf Fofana: ‘We all know that.’

Fonseca held a press conference on Tuesday night following Milan’s 3-1 win over Monza in the Trofeo Berlusconi.

The Serie A giants have already signed three players in the summer transfer window and Fonseca is waiting for a new face in the middle of the park.

Milan have been in talks with Monaco for Fofana for several weeks and when the Portuguese coach was asked which is the club’s main target for that position, he provided a sincere reply.

“It’s Fofana, we all know that,” said the Portuguese.

Fonseca was delighted with Milan’s performance against Monza.

“It’s still a long way to go, but the team is already trying to put into practice some of my ideas,” he noted, as quoted by Gazzetta.

“We’ve only worked for five weeks and two different teams played today. There’s still a lot to do, but I am happy because the players are trying to replicate the things we’ve worked on these days.

“I like the possession phase the most, especially in attack. It’s a different playing style. I don’t make comparisons with the past; I am only saying that it’s different. We need time to improve defensively. If we want to press high, we must improve in many aspects.”

Alexis Saelemaekers scored one goal and was among the best players at San Siro last night. The Belgian has returned from a one-year loan at Bologna and has been linked with a move to Juventus, but Fonseca wants him to stay.

“He can play well in different roles. He works hard defensively and he can do important things up front. I really like him and I hope he stays,” said the Rossoneri boss.”

Last but not least, Fonseca shared his thoughts on his compatriot Rafael Leao who had had highs and lows in 2023-24.

“He seems more open to playing for the team. We work well together and always chat. I don’t know if he will be better or worse than last season, but surely he’ll be a different player,” Fonseca concluded.

  1. One player won’t fix the chronic problem when out of possession. The rest of his teammates in midfield do nothing when they don’t have the ball.
