The former Shakhtar Donetsk boss took over the Giallorossi job this summer, replacing Claudio Ranieri after his caretaker spell.

Today is the end of the second week of pre-season training in Trigoria, and according to Tuttomercatoweb Fonseca is starting to get an idea of who he does and doesn’t want in his squad.

Amadou Diawara and Jordan Vereteout will arrive this morning for their pre-season medicals, and there will have to be departures in that area.

Steven Nzonzi has no place in Fonseca’s plans and doesn’t want to stay, so he’ll be allowed to leave if a buyer can be found.

Former sporting director Monchi spent €29m on the French international though, meaning he can’t be sold for anything under €20m or Roma will make a loss. Lyon are interested but won’t offer anything like that kind of money.

Javier Pastore was also expected to leave, not least because of his injury record, but TMW reports that Fonseca has been impressed with the Argentine in pre-season.

The new Coach is aware of Pastore’s injury record, but has been struck by his technical quality, and will likely give him a chance to win his place in the team.

Rick Karsdorp will be allowed to leave the club, but Fonseca’s favourites from pre-season are Justin Kluivert and Cengiz Under, and the Coach has made it clear they should not be sold under any circumstances.
