Shakhtar Donetsk have appointed Roberto De Zerbi and former coach Paulo Fonseca said the Ukrainians have made ‘a very good choice’.

The Portuguese coach leaves Roma when his contract expires this summer and is currently looking for a new club.

De Zerbi decided to leave Sassuolo after another successful campaign and helped the Neroverdi push Roma for seventh until the last day of the championship.

Fonseca believes De Zerbi will be successful in Ukraine too and has supported Shakhtar’s decision to appoint the 41-year-old.

“They made a very good choice,” Fonseca told Sky Sport Italia. “De Zerbi is among the best in Italy. I like him because he’s attacking, they couldn’t have made a better choice.

“I have no doubts he will win.”

But Fonseca denies his former club contacted him to ask for advice, but said he would have gladly recommended the former Benevento and Palermo coach.

“They didn’t ask me for advice, but if they did, my first name would have been De Zerbi.”
