Fonseca: ‘Atalanta pressed Roma’

Paulo Fonseca acknowledged Roma’s first defeat of the season was “deserved, because Atalanta played better and pressed us all over the pitch.”

The Orobici emerged from the Stadio Olimpico with a 2-0 result thanks to Duvan Zapata and Marten de Roon goals.

“We have to recognise that Atalanta played better and pressed us all over the pitch. We didn’t find the right solutions and therefore it was a deserved result,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“We wanted to play the ball and press high, but we went too deep and weren’t aggressive enough. Despite it not being a good performance, we were still stable defensively in the first half and had a big chance with that save on Edin Dzeko. We’d be talking about a different game if we’d scored that opportunity.

“Atalanta didn’t have any real chances in the first half. We must now analyse the defeat and understand where we can all improve.”

Fonseca surprised by moving Roma to a 3-4-2-1 formation early on, with Aleksandar Kolarov in the back three.

“We studied all the possible situations. It doesn’t change our attacking approach or our basic concepts. We just changed and improved our defensive set-up to deal with Josip Ilicic and Papu Gomez movements, as they were going very deep to get the ball.”

Atalanta will play Fonseca’s old club Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League next week, so does he have any predictions?

“I don’t like to predict. It’s always difficult to take on Atalanta and I saw their (4-0 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb), but that result did not reflect the performance.”
