“We want first place in the group and that means winning one more game. Despite many difficulties, the lads showed great character today, some having to play out of position and sacrificing themselves for the team, which I appreciated,” the coach told Sky Sport Italia.
“I liked the way everyone played, especially in the circumstances, and in roles that were not their own.”
The Giallorossi are top of Group A with 10 points, followed by Young Boys on seven, Cluj four and CSKA Sofia one.
Roma will play at the Stadio San Paolo on Sunday in Serie A, although by that point it might already have been renamed the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
“It’s the perfect tribute for Maradona and will become even more of a legendary arena,” noted Fonseca.
“It was a very sad for anyone who loves football, especially someone like me who grew up watching Maradona. He was an idol for all of us who are passionate about this sport.”
