Milan defender Alessandro Florenzi is expected to return to training as normal following his deposition at the prosecutors’ office in Turin on Thursday afternoon.

The 32-year-old was placed under formal investigation on Wednesday for his alleged use of illegal betting platforms, but the Italy international insists he only ever played roulette and did not gamble on football.

Florenzi is the fourth player to be placed under formal investigation. In recent months, eight and ten-month bans were handed to Juventus’ Nicolo Fagioli and Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali respectively.

Aston Villa’s Nicolo Zaniolo has also been questioned, but has received no formal suspension thus far.

As per La Gazzetta dello Sport, Florenzi’s case is similar to Zaniolo’s in that there is little evidence to suggest that either placed bets on football and therefore runs the risk of a fine rather than a ban.

Florenzi spoke to the prosecutors for around an hour on Thursday, reiterating his stance that he did not bet on football.

There is a chance that Florenzi could be called again to speak to both the FIGC and the federal prosecutor’s office in Rome, but given the lack of evidence to suggest he ever bet on football, La Gazzetta suggests that another deposition would be unlikely.

In the meantime, Florenzi is expected to return to Milanello to train with the rest of the Rossoneri squad as usual in the coming days.
