Milan full-back Alessandro Florenzi reveals what Roma directors told him when pushing out Francesco Totti, Daniele De Rossi and him. ‘They said Roma supporters didn’t need heroes anymore.’
They all wore the captain’s armband and represented the Giallorossi to the core, having been born and raised as Roma fans, getting to play for their dream club.
However, in the space of a few years, Totti, De Rossi and Florenzi were systematically pushed out of the Stadio Olimpico and made to find different teams.
Totti opted to retire rather than play for someone else, while De Rossi went to Boca Juniors and Florenzi was loaned to PSG before heading back to Serie A for Milan.
“Of course I miss Roma, because it is still part of me,” Florenzi told DAZN.
“It was and always will be the team I supported since I was a child and I gave everything for this club.
“The moment I realised that we were going our different ways was when they told me Roma supporters didn’t need heroes anymore.
“I watched in succession the farewells of De Rossi and Totti, so I realised it was my turn. I did it trying to create as few problems as possible for the club, behaving as an exemplary professional. I accepted the situation and moved forward.
“The experience abroad at PSG helped, because I never got to face Roma as an opponent. Now meeting them in Serie A is a little difficult for me.”
