Alessandro Florenzi feels that his Roma exit was ‘not about’ his abilities on the pitch and is eager to make his mark for new club Milan. ‘I’ll even play in goal.’

The transfer was completed this morning, on loan with an option to buy for a total €5m fee, after his previous loans at Valencia and PSG.

“I feel that my departure from Roma was not just a technical decision based on my playing, but I haven’t entirely understood why yet,” confessed the Giallorossi born and bred full-back in his press conference.

“The decision was made three years ago and I accepted it with a heavy heart, because everyone knows I am a Roma fan. Now I am here with a club that believes in me and that’s the most important thing as far as I am concerned. Those experiences are now behind me and I will give my all for Milan.

“It has to be the minimum target for Milan to qualify for the Champions League again next season. That’s what the fans, the team and the club want. I will try to help the team with my attitude, on the field and off it, as that is the only way I know to earn the trust of the coach.”

Florenzi is now mainly a right-back, but can also play on the left, in midfield or in a more advanced wide role.

“I am at the disposal of Stefano Pioli to play in any role, even in goal for Mike Maignan,” joked the Italy international.

“The important thing is to help the team achieve its objectives. The badge on the jersey is more important than the name on the back.”

If he is at right-back, then will face competition from Davide Calabria for the starting spot.

“It’s natural at a club like Milan to have competition for places. We must take it one game at a time and try to win them all.

“I bring my experience and want to help everyone realise it’s your attitude, on and off the pitch, that makes the difference. You have to believe that one less dessert can help you win a game. If we all work in the same direction, Milan can have a great season. I sense a lot of positive energy here.

“If your teammates see you with the right attitude, they follow your lead.”
