Roma’s Alessandro Florenzi has hit back at Italy’s critics during the Euro 2016 championships in France.

The Azzurri reached the quarter finals of the tournament before losing to Germany in a penalty shootout.

“Around us there was a lot of nastiness at times, towards a group that gave everything until the end and has nothing to complain about,” Florenzi told Roma TV.

“We gave everything. We had Germany on the ropes, who in my opinion are the strongest team around. We beat Spain.

“The regret is that we couldn’t bring home the victory.”

The 25-year-old also wants his club side to make journalists eat their words this season, with many writing off the Giallorossi’s Scudetto chances before a ball has been kicked.

“We need to do well and make the journalists and sometimes fans eat all of their words.

“Few words, a lot of actions and a lot of work.

“Building on the second half of last season wouldn’t be bad, but in football memory is short.

“We need to always think about the next game, with the right mentality we can win every game.”
