Mathieu Flamini believes Paulo Fonseca ‘could be the right coach for Milan’ next season, as he appreciates the need for beautiful football.

Stefano Pioli has parted company with the Rossoneri after five years and although it is not formally announced yet, everyone is confident that Fonseca has the job wrapped up.

“It was not a terrible season for Milan, but we all hope they can win the Scudetto,” Flamini told Sky Sport Italia.

“They are improving and we hope for next season.”

Fonseca is coming off an experience at Lille and already has Serie A experience from his two years at Roma.

Not everyone is impressed with the idea of the Portuguese tactician at San Siro, but Flamini has confidence.

“He is a quality coach. The fans want to win, he is someone who likes beautiful football, so he could be the right coach for Milan.”

Flamini bets on Fonseca

Now 40, Flamini wore the Milan jersey from 2008 to 2013 and hung up his boots in 2019.

He made 122 appearances for the Rossoneri in his playing career, scoring eight goals and providing six assists, winning the Scudetto in the 2010-11 campaign.

The Diavolo secured second place in Serie A behind rivals Inter this season, but that was considered insufficient to keep Pioli in place, especially after crashing out of the Champions League in the group stage and losing to Roma in the Europa League quarter-final.
