Five Inter problems Inzaghi must deal with starting from Barcelona to save his job

La Gazzetta Dello Sport highlights five problems Inter boss Simone Inzaghi must solve starting from the game against Barcelona to save his job at the Stadio Meazza.

The pink paper believes the next three games will be crucial to decide the future of Inzaghi who lost four of the opening eight Serie A games this season, plus one in the Champions League against Bayern Munich.

The Nerazzurri host Barcelona at San Siro tomorrow and Gazzetta highlights the five problems Inzaghi must deal with starting from the crucial Champions League meeting with Xavi’s side.

Inter have already conceded 13 goals in Serie A, two more than last season after eight games. What’s even more worrying is that two of the last five came from set-pieces, suggesting that players are not always focused. Stefan de Vrij has lost his starting spot to Francesco Acerbi, while Milan Skriniar and Alessandro Bastoni haven’t always been up to the task. The Slovakia international had reached an agreement with PSG in the summer, but Inter refused to sell for less than €70m and Gazzetta notes that his ‘head seems to be elsewhere’ in the opening stages of the campaign.

Inter players look too irritable during games. It was one of the matters discussed by the club and the coach in September, but Inzaghi doesn’t seem to have solved this problem. The team’s anxiety has recently been mirrored by the attitude of Nicolò Barella who often ‘showed signs of impatience’ towards his teammate Asllani during Saturday’s 2-1 loss against Roma.

Goalkeeper chaos

Inzaghi has been alternating Samir Handanovic and André Onana, using the new signing in the two Champions League games against Bayern Munich and Viktoria Plzen. The ex-Ajax goalkeeper will start between the sticks against Barcelona, but many Inter fans hope he will soon become a regular starter in league games too. Handanovic has looked shaky at times and was blamed for Paulo Dybala’s equaliser against Roma, while Onana made ten saves against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, suggesting that Inzaghi should re-think the hierarchy between the sticks.

Dependant on Lukaku

The game against Barcelona is the eighth he misses this season due to a muscle injury. ‘Big Rom’ contributed to two goals (one goal and one assist) in the opening three Serie A games of the season. Edin Dzeko and Lautaro Martinez have only netted once each since Lukaku has been forced to the sidelines. It’s no coincidence that Matteo Darmian has warned his teammates that the absence of the Chelsea loanee ‘should not be an excuse‘ against Barcelona tomorrow.

Several key players have suffered injuries this season: Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Romelu Lukaku, Hakan Calhanoglu, Marcelo Brozovic and now Lautaro Martinez who is in doubt for the game with Barcelona, as confirmed by Inzaghi. What’s even more worrying is that all these players suffered flexor injuries, a strange ‘coincidence’ that the coach and his staff must carefully analyse.

  1. Inzaghi lost the plot, he is only there because Zhang won`t allocate money to fire him.

What were they thinking for rewarding him in summer by extending his contract until 2024 for losing scudetto?

  2. I have to say that it’s hard to see a club starting a new season with a coach who has a contract expiring the following summer.

  3. Sack inzaghi now, the coward of a coach could easily destroy teams 5 ,1 by playing ,
    Mikitarian dezko lutaro

    Hakan Chan
    Brozovic. Berrella
Back 4 with a goal keepers
But the coward won’t , nothing is wrong with inter ,the formation choice no longer fits the talent he has , Zhag has to sack him .

  4. Ivm really sick of FI commentsv moderators, i write ligit comments, non of them are offensive, but nothing get published! Who the hell moderates here!

  5.
