Atalanta striker German Denis has been banned for five games after punching Empoli’s Lorenzo Tonelli.

The striker got into an altercation with the centre-back after the match, supposedly after Tonelli made threats against his family.

Atalanta striker German Denis has been banned for five games after punching Empoli’s Lorenzo Tonelli.

The striker got into an altercation with the centre-back after the match, supposedly after Tonelli made threats against his family.

Unsurprisingly, the Lega Serie A has taken a dim view of the incident, with the Empoli man picking up a one match ban.

The disciplinary commission found that the 25-year-old declared “I’ll kill you and your family” during the match.

The punishment for Denis is even more severe, and the Argentinian will miss most of the rest of the season, having been slapped with a five match ban.

“A few minutes after returning to the dressing room, Denis, along with a teammate, went to the Empoli dressing room, and once Tonelli approached, struck him with a violent punch to the face,” the finding in the disciplinary report reads.

“Having evaluated the severity of such violent conduct, which was totally outwith any competitive context, the player German Denis is suspended for five games effective immediately.”

Verona’s Rafael and José Eduardo de Araújo of Cesena have been banned for one match after being sent off at the weekend.

Fernando Avelar [Cagliari], Domenico Berardi [Sassuolo], Leonardo Bonucci [Juventus], Andrea Costa and Zouhair Feddal [Parma], Carlo Gazzi [Torino], Evangelos Moras [Verona], Emiliano Moretti [Torino], Mounir Obaddi [Verona] and Edy Onazi [Lazio] have also picked up a one match ban, after crossing the disciplinary threshold.

Inter have two defenders suspended after the Roma match, with Andrea Ranocchia and Juan Jesus picking up one booking too many.

A decision on the violence which marred the Derby della Mole will be made at a later date, as the federal prosecutor takes time to gather evidence.
