Moldova coach Engin Firat was ‘furious’ after the 6-0 defeat to Italy. ‘I must apologise to the fans, because this has never happened in my career.’

It was already 5-0 by half-time with a Stephan El Shaarawy brace, Bryan Cristante, Francesco Caputo and an own goal, then Domenico Berardi added the sixth.

“I am furious, as this is the worst defeat of my career, even worse than against France,” said Firat in his press conference.

“We knew that Italy had a quality squad and if one of our players wasn’t on form, we’d have problems. If two make mistakes, then we are in real trouble.

“On the Caputo goal and the second El Shaarawy one, it was four or five players who made mistakes. I must apologise to the fans, because this has never happened in my career.

“In these situations, the best thing you can do is forget as quickly as possible and focus on the next match. I cannot be too harsh on them, as they need motivation.”
