Lucas Torreira will return to Arsenal following his loan spell with Fiorentina as no agreements were reached over a permanent move.

The 26-year-old Uruguayan midfielder joined the Viola last summer after a long courtship by sporting director Joe Barone and he quickly carved out a spot for himself in Vincenzo Italiano’s team, becoming a core member of the midfield. A stay in Florence seemed all but certain, but things suddenly changed over recent weeks.

As reported by Gianluca Di Marzio, Fiorentina will not sign Torreira and he’ll return to Arsenal this summer. The Viola tried to secure a discount from the Gunners, who weren’t too keen on the idea.

Barone also asked Torreira to further lower his salary; with Arsenal, the Uruguayan was earning €4m net per season, more than the €2.5m he earnt during his loan spell, and Fiorentina asked him to further lower that figure.

With one year left on his Arsenal contract, Torreira will now have to find a new home this summer as he looks to relaunch his career.
