Cremonese begin their first Serie A campaign since 1996 with a trip to Florence to take on a Fiorentina side that improved markedly last season. The Viola only missed out on Europa League qualification because of a bad run of form towards the end of last year and will be looking to start off this season with a convincing win.

2 – Fiorentina under 1.5 total goals – 13/8

3 – Draw after 90 minutes – 15/4

4 – Both teams to score – 19/20

5 – A 1-1 draw – 8/1

Fiorentina had been struggling in the bottom half of the league for a few years until last season’s upturn. Even the arrival of a new wealthy owner had been unable to change things – or stop the inevitable sale of the best players.

But after the chaos of the 2020-21 season, when Fiorentina worked their way through three managers, Vincenzo Italiano arrived last year to stabilise the club and give it more direction. Even the departure of Dušan Vlahović in the January transfer window did not affect the improvement.

Now Viola fans will be hoping that things can get even better – and a home opener against promoted Cremonese would seem to be the perfect way to start. The arrival of Luka Jović from Real Madrid – via Eintracht Frankfurt – has everyone very excited.

They are probably not quite as excited as the Cremonese fans though. This will be the first time in 26 years that the iconic grey and red shirts will grace the Italian top flight. But it will be a tough fight to avoid the drop straight back down.

There have been some new signings to bolster the squad but the arrival of a new coach may have the biggest effect on how the team performs this season. This is Massimiliano Alvini’s first ever Serie A appointment and there will be a lot of pressure on him to succeed.

Cremonese managed to get through their Coppa Italia round of 64 tie against Serie B side Ternana on Monday. New signing David Okereke scored in the 3-2 victory after an impressive season on loan at Venezia last season. But the Grigiorossi will find Fiorentina a tougher nut to crack.

Fiorentina team news

The biggest decision for Vincenzo Italiano is probably who to go with up front. New signing Luka Jović may be the obvious choice but Artur Cabral is another possibility. Venuti will probably miss out after he picked up an injury last month.

Cremonese team news

There are no injury worries for Serie A managerial debutant Massimiliano Alvini. He will hope that David Okereke can continue the form he has shown in pre-season as a regular goalscorer is crucial to the chances of Cremonese staying up.
