Fiorentina are back in Europe for the first time since 2016-17, as they’ll play the Conference League play-offs, while Lazio and Roma qualify for the Europa League, leaving Atalanta out.

The final round of the 2021-22 Serie A season is in full swing and fifth to eighth place were finalised with tonight’s results.

Lazio already knew they were in the Europa League, but required a point against Verona to make sure they finished in fifth place, ahead of rivals Roma.

They secured it with a 3-3 draw against Hellas Verona.

As for the lone Conference League spot, that went to Fiorentina, who had not qualified for a UEFA competition since the 2016-17 Europa League, as they beat Juventus 2-0.

Atalanta had qualified for the Champions League for three seasons in a row, but next term they will only have Serie A and the Coppa Italia to focus on.

They needed to get a better result than Fiorentina this evening, but were beaten 1-0 at home by Empoli after wasting numerous scoring opportunities, which somewhat summed up their season in a nutshell.

It is the first time after six consecutive seasons, three of them in the Champions League, that Atalanta failed to qualify for Europe.
