Fiorentina have condemned the section of their support that barricaded the players in the dressing room after the club’s home defeat to Lecce last weekend.

After a shock 1-0 reverse to the relegation-threatened Salentini, fans’ protests at the Stadio Artemio Franchi turned violent as a group of ultras made their way to the players’ changing room to reportedly demand an explanation from the footballers for their performance.

After a stand-off, a select few were allowed to talk to the players, whilst it was also reported that the club’s directors required a police escort out of the stadium.

Almost a week on from the incident, club President Mario Cognigni [pictured, centre] has offered an official response to the incident.

“We are here today to totally reject the gratuitous violence on Sunday after the match against Lecce. We can understand and accept any kind of criticism but we do not accept insults and threats.

“We are a club with strong values that needs the support of its fans, ones who have always distinguished themselves by their atmosphere.

“For the sceptics I would say just look at the balance sheets to see what it takes to run Fiorentina.

“In July, we pointed out that our team must above all else have a common bond between the city and the club.”

Congigni also took time to dispel rumours that sporting director Pantaleo Corvino was on his way out of the club.

“He is an important component with whom we are planning the future of Fiorentina. In football it is not easy to be at the highest level.”

La Viola close the first half of the season away from home in a mid-table clash with Davide Ballardini’s rejuvenated Cagliari.
