Sportitalia maintain a huge €8m commission for agent Jorge Mendes in the Sergio Oliviera deal was the final straw in Fiorentina’s rapport with Gennaro Gattuso.

The coach signed on for the Viola only to terminate the contract by mutual consent just 23 days later.

Tension over their transfer strategy was the main cause, above all being asked to over-pay for players represented by Mendes, who is also Gattuso’s agent.

Sportitalia transfer expert Alfredo Pedullà outlines the moment that truly broke the rapport.

FC Porto wanted €20m for Sergio Oliviera, but Mendes also requested €8m in commission to broker the deal.

That was considered excessive and Fiorentina President Rocco Commisso felt he was being ripped off by his new coach.

Gattuso had then met with Tottenham Hotspur, but a backlash from Spurs supporters saw the club immediately give up any attempt on reaching an agreement.

Tottenham had also been in talks with former Roma coach Paulo Fonseca, but pulled out there too.
