Fiorentina will wear black armbands today to mourn Socrates, the Brazilian legend who played here in 1984-85.

The captain of the 1982 World Cup squad died last night in Sao Paolo at the age of 57, where he had been in hospital in critical condition for an intestinal infection since Friday.

The legendary midfielder had also been hospitalised twice in recent months for intestinal problems.

Socrates won 60 caps for Brazil between 1979 and 1986, scoring 22 goals, but was also well known for his smoking and drinking off the field.

He also played for Botafogo, Corinthians, Flamengo and Santos before retiring aged 35 in 1989.
