Fiorentina have hit back at Stefano Pioli following his resignation, branding the Coach ‘incomprehensible and unjustifiable’.

Pioli accused the club of ‘forcing’ him to step down from his position, on the grounds that Fiorentina ‘questioned’ his character, but the club insist it was the 53-year-old who put them in ‘an unexpected and complicated situation’.

“We consider Stefano Pioli a respectable person who has always behaved correctly towards the club until yesterday,” read a statement on the Viola’s official website.

“For this reason, we consider his attitude incomprehensible and unjustifiable, putting the club in an unexpected and complicated situation to manage.

“The statement made by Fiorentina, and reported by the entire Press, was needed to clarify the position of the club and call for the utmost commitment from everyone, without offending or delegitimising anyone.

“Therefore, the reasons for Pioli’s resignation (a few days before the expiry of his contract) has nothing to do with the statement made by the club, and the first to know about it was Pioli.

“Now, however, we need to look ahead and focus exclusively on the sporting results that we must and can certainly achieve.”
