Fiorentina announce that winger Riccardo Sottil has had surgery to deal with a recurring back problem and is expected to be out of action for a couple of months.

The 23-year-old winger has already struggled with this issue all season, making just 10 appearances between Serie A and the Conference League, but still contributing three assists.

He has not played since September 18 and had hoped that conservative treatment would be sufficient.

However, as the medical staff saw no improvement, they recommended Sottil have surgery to resolve the herniated disc in his back.

The player will be released from hospital tomorrow and a statement from the club notes he is expected to resume training in circa five weeks.

Sottil also announced it himself via Instagram Stories, saluting fans from his hospital bed.

“Operation went well, ready to return stronger than ever.”

He is the son of Udinese coach Andrea Sottil and last season was instrumental in helping Fiorentina qualify for the Conference League with three goals and two assists in 24 Serie A appearances.
