Fiorentina released a statement confirming they have parted company with club legend Giancarlo Antognoni, despite offering him a new role.
He wore the Viola jersey from 1972 to 1987 and had been club manager since 2017, but clashed repeatedly with the hierarchy.
Following a meeting with director general Joe Barone, Fiorentina “accept, with profound regret, Antognoni’s desire to not continue his collaboration with the Club.
“We had identified for Antognoni the role of Technical Director of the youth academy. A proposal and role identified as the optimal solution and perfect for both.
“President Commisso and his family, director general Giuseppe Barone, director of sport Daniele Prade, all the directors and Viola family thank Giancarlo Antognoni for all he has given Fiorentina over the years and wish him the best for his future, both personal and professional.
“Giancarlo will always remain a Viola symbol.”
