Fiorentina coach Vincenzo Italiano and several players have arrived at the hospital to visit director Joe Barone, as the game with Atalanta was called off due to his illness.

The Serie A match had been due to kick off at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo at 17.00 GMT.

However, the director general was suddenly taken ill in the team hotel, in the presence of several players and staff.

He was rushed to hospital in nearby Milan, the San Raffaele, one of the best in the country.

Fiorentina were understandably in shock and the Lega Serie A accepted their request to postpone the match to a later date.

Coach Italiano, captain Cristiano Biraghi and some other players have arrived at the hospital to be close to Barone.

He is reported to be in the intensive care unit following a suspected aneurysm.

Italian-American director Barone is due to celebrate his 58th birthday on Wednesday and has been at Fiorentina working under President Rocco Commisso since November 2019.
