Liveblog: Finalissima 2022, Italy vs. Argentina

This is the third edition of the tournament between the reigning European Champions and the Copa America holders, with previous trophies won by France in 1985 and Argentina in 1993.

The Azzurri lifted the EURO 2020 trophy in this very stadium under a year ago, yet things have changed a great deal since then, failing to qualify for the World Cup and losing key players to injury.

Federico Chiesa, Ciro Immobile, Marco Verratti, Domenico Berardi, Rafael Toloi, Moise Kean and Nicolò Zaniolo are ruled out, with Lorenzo Insigne and Jorginho not 100 per cent fit.

Roberto Mancini therefore had to put together a makeshift front line with Federico Bernardeschi, Andrea Belotti and Giacomo Raspadori.

Argentina are on a 35-match unbeaten international run and can field several Serie A-based players, including Lautaro Martinez, Nahuel Molina and imminent Juventus free transfer Di Maria.

Leo Messi is the star man, facing his PSG teammate Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Paulo Dybala had originally been named in the starting XI, but that was later changed to have Giovani Lo Celso instead.

Italy: Donnarumma; Di Lorenzo, Bonucci, Chiellini, Emerson; Pessina, Jorginho, Barella; Bernardeschi, Belotti, Raspadori

Italy bench: Cragno, Spinazzola, Locatelli, Lazzari, Florenzi, Politano, Meret, Acerbi, Cristante, Scamacca, Pellegrini, Bastoni

Argentina: E Martinez; Molina, Romero, Otamendi, Tagliagico; De Paul, Rodriguez, Lo Celso; Messi, Lautaro Martinez, Di Maria

Argentina bench: Armani, Foyth, MacAllister, Pezzella, Acuña, Alvarez, Rulli, Palacios, N Gonzalez, Lisandro Martinez, Papu Gomez, Dybala

  1. Bernardeschi? Belotti?? Pessina??

Players that have barely featured or who have done nothing of note this season.

I don’t see the logic in including those players. It’s as if Mancini deliberately wants to lose the match.
