While Napoli reiterate the release clause must be paid, the FIGC seems determined to make Luciano Spalletti the next Italy coach after Roberto Mancini’s sudden resignation.

Mancini was under contract until July 2026, but announced he was leaving the Azzurri job on Sunday afternoon.

With EURO 2024 qualifiers coming up in early September, the rush is on to find a replacement.

Antonio Conte and Fabio Grosso are potential candidates, but Spalletti quickly emerged as the favourite and journalist Alessandro Alciato insists the deal has been done.

However, Sky Sport Italia are more cautious and note the FIGC lawyers are working on ways to activate the release clause in his contract, which allowed him to leave Napoli over the summer.

Napoli lawyer Mattia Grassani reiterated today that the clause does include a national team as well as a club, though the FIGC are trying to find a loophole.

The Italian Federation has no intention of paying a penalty to get the coach they want, especially considering he has already left his club side after winning the Scudetto.
