It means that if the season were to conclude ahead of time due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 20 current Serie A clubs would remain as they are, with no title assigned, no relegation to Serie B and consequently no promotion from Serie B.
Benevento President Oreste Vigorito has already stated he is “ready to do anything” in order to stop this from happening, as it would prevent their promotion despite being 20 points clear in Serie B.
It is now widely reported the FIGC (Italian Football Federation) will veto the idea of simply freezing current positions.
Other alternatives include play-offs to decide positions or using an algorithm to calculate sporting merit.
