FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio has put Italy forward to FIFA to trial the introduction of video technology in football.

The debate has risen again following the controversy in Serie A last weekend over the award of two penalties to Juventus against Roma.

The Italian Football Federation’s President commented in the days after that he would push FIFA to consider introducing video replays for such contentious issues and that he would volunteer Italy to trial the proposed methods.

Today the FIGC have released a note on their website confirming the first stage of such an intended action has been taken.

“At the end of today’s Executive Committee, the President of the FIGC Carlo Tavecchio has sent a letter to FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter, making available Italy for a possible trial of technology in the field in the forms and schedules that will be evaluated by the same FIFA and the International [Football Association] Board [IFAB],” the FIGC’s statement reads.

“Following on from what has been mentioned in recent days, the Federcalcio has interpreted one of its priorities as to be an instrument for the study of the use of technological means that enable it to protect the centrality and credibility of the referee, guarantor in the field for the correct application of the rules of the game.”

This statement also carries a sentence from Tavecchio, who this week received a six month ban from UEFA for racist comments made in the run-up to his election as President.

“The FIGC intends to work in increasing intensity to preserve the traditions of the game of football, but at the same time promote the modernisation of work that enables our beloved sport to continue to meet the challenges of the global consensus and involvement of the people,” the 71-year-old has commented.
