The FIGC Federal Prosecutor’s Office has opened proceedings against Genoa midfielder Manolo Portanova, who was sentenced to six years in prison for participating in a gang rape.

The 22-year-old was accused of raping a 21-year-old student along with three others, including his uncle Alessio Langella, at a house party in Siena in May 2021. Portanova and Langella requested a fast-track trial and were sentenced to six years in prison for participating in the act, as well as being handed a €120,000 fine.

Italian law gives Portanova at least three and possibly four levels to appeal to and until all of these have been exhausted, the presumption of innocence as well as freedom from imprisonment remain. Genoa’s decision not to suspend the 22-year-old following the sentencing was met with outcry by fans and observers.

As reported by ANSA, the FIGC Federal Prosecutor’s Office have decided to open proceedings against Portanova and they’ve already sent their request for court documents to the Court of Siena, keen to start any possible sports justice actions.
