Roma's CEO Guido Fienga reveals Manchester United wanted to keep hold of Chris Smalling who joined the Giallorossi for €15m plus add-ons in the deadline day.

Fienga spoke during the official unveiling of the English defender and Borja Mayoral who joined Roma from Real Madrid.

"Today I am particularly proud to be able to present together both Chris Smalling and Borja Mayoral,” Fienga told reporters.

“They are two players coming from two of the best clubs in the world, but they chose Roma. You know the details of Smalling’s transfer and this is proof that both parties strongly wanted to make it happen.

“We have a nice feeling also with Mayoral, he had other important alternatives, including staying at Real Madrid that wanted to keep him. It’s fair to say that Smalling was a cornerstone of Man United that wanted to keep hold of him.

“We have two great players and two good guys, we they can help us win. They are motivated and have chosen Roma instead of other projects, a choice to achieve ambitious goals".
