Maria Sole Ferrieri Caputi has been assigned to officiate the upcoming match between Sassuolo and Salernitana, becoming the first female Serie A referee.

The 32-year-old Italian referee has quickly risen up the ranks of Italian football over the last few years, adding a breath of fresh air to the world of officials after impressing in Serie D and Serie C matches. 

Last season, Ferrieri Caputi oversaw her first match in Serie B, officiating a 0-0 draw between Cittadella and SPAL, and in the same year she became the first female referee to take part in a match involving a Serie A team, leading Cagliari’s 3-1 Coppa Italia win over Cittadella.

As announced by Sky Sports Italia, Ferrieri Caputi has broken through another barrier to become the first female referee to officiate a Serie A match, being assigned to Sassuolo’s upcoming game against Salernitana.

The 32-year-old is continuing to impress as she rises up the ranks and could soon become a regular feature in the Italian topflight.
