Sampdoria President Massimo Ferrero reveals he had tried to hire Claudio Ranieri before, but “right now the stars have aligned.”
Eusebio Di Francesco was fired after six defeats in seven games, leaving them bottom of the Serie A table, and called in former Roma boss Ranieri.
“I am proud and honoured to welcome a great man, but above all a great professional,” said Ferrero at Ranieri’s presentation Press conference.

“I am proud and honoured to welcome a great man, but above all a great professional,” said Ferrero at Ranieri’s presentation Press conference.
“Di Francesco is an excellent Coach with big ideas, but the wheel of fortune simply didn’t turn in his favour. We are only seven games in, there are another 31 to go and we have a gentleman at the helm now who has everything it takes, so I am confident.
“This is a big club, a big business, and we are evaluating if we need to add anything in January.”
Di Francesco had said several times that the confusion over a club takeover that never materialised was causing tension within the squad, but Ferrero has now ended negotiations with Gianluca Vialli’s group of investors.
“You all created an alibi that didn’t exist,” insisted the President. “There has been too much talk. I am in charge of Sampdoria and we did what we needed to do. There was an offer, it didn’t go through, now I don’t want to hear any more about it.”
Ferrero was also irritated when asked if he had sought advice on Ranieri from Francesco Totti and Antonio Cassano.
“Let’s be very clear, I always talk to them, but I don’t need them to tell me where the sun is in the sky. We looked at Ranieri several years ago, but right now the stars have aligned. We are two Romans who want what is best for Sampdoria.”
