Sampdoria President Massimo Ferrero is prepared to let Marco Giampaolo go, but “Milan haven’t called me, and they ought to.”

Multiple reports are confident Giampaolo is first choice to replace Gennaro Gattuso at San Siro, although confirmation will only arrive once Paolo Maldini is appointed technical director.

“I did see and speak to the Coach. He has a one-year contract with us and is now on vacation, but we’ll meet on Monday and understand if our paths will continue together,” Ferrero told reporters at the Football Leader event.

“If we do continue, I’ll be happy. If he wants to go elsewhere, I cannot hold back someone who doesn’t love Sampdoria and does not want to stay in my club.”

Former Fiorentina boss Stefano Pioli is expected to be the replacement at Samp, but Ferrero sent out another warning.

“I won’t name names, as I am not seeking anyone. Others seek us out. It would be unfair to talk about other Coaches, as Giampaolo might want to stay. You’d have to ask me on Tuesday.

“If Milan want Giampaolo, they’d need to call me. They haven’t called me, and they ought to. After all, the seventh commandment says thou shalt not desire another man’s woman, so they ought to call me.”

Ferrero also dismissed reports Fabio Quagliarella could move back to his hometown club Napoli.

“I can absolutely rule that out, it’s not up for debate. He has a contract with us, is happy at Sampdoria. We can give him all the credit in the world, but people forget Ferrero bought him when nobody believed in this player.

“I think he will grow old with Sampdoria. If he were to ask me to leave, we’d sit down and talk about it. I want a player who is motivated with his heart, his legs and his head.”
