Sampdoria President Massimo Ferrero insists “my heart was always with Vincenzo Montella”.

The former striker has been appointed as the new Blucerchiati Coach following the dismissal of Walter Zenga, and the patron discussed the appointment with Premium Sport.

“I’ve brought the best Coach I could choose,” Ferrero said.

The former striker has been appointed as the new Blucerchiati Coach following the dismissal of Walter Zenga, and the patron discussed the appointment with Premium Sport.

“I’ve brought the best Coach I could choose,” Ferrero said.

“It was a dream of mine to have him, and God helped me, his simplicity, work and strength have always struck me.

“He was born a star, I’m really proud and also excited. When I arrived there was already a Coach [Sinisa Mihajlovic] and then we chose another, Walter Zenga.

“I thank him, but my heart was always with Montella. You know how much passion I put into a game, but now, even if we’re losing, I’ll be happy if we play good football.

“Vincenzo will give us great emotions, because there are Coaches who play football and others who play ball – he belongs to the first category.

“Objectives? I’m fine with anything Montella does, he doesn’t need to take lessons from me.”

Ferrero also confirmed remarks earlier today from the club’s lawyer that Samp had not paid a release clause to secure Montella.

“It’s true, we didn’t pay anything. I must say ‘thank you’ to Diego Della Valle, who – among other things – gave me a trip on Italo [high-speed train].

“I want to thank and pay tribute to a great industrialist: ‘Thank you Diego!’

“I’m very thrifty, I took the train here, because the plane seemed too expensive. I want to spend the money on the team!”
