Inter director general Marco Fassone has compared Inter Coach Roberto Mancini to Azzurri Coach Antonio Conte, whilst discussing the team's prospects.

Mancini picked up the reins of the Nerazzurri at the end of last year surrounded by great expectations, but has struggled to improve their performances. Fassone, interviewed by Tuttosport on the matter, already has a model in mind for his Coach.

“Conte won immediately [at Juventus], becoming an icon,” he said. “I hope Roberto can do the same in a short period of time.

“He was clear when he came that he didn't want to be a transitional Coach, but someone who means to win as early as possible, and bring Inter back into the Champions League.”

Fassone was also asked whether the current Coach could help attract difficult transfer targets like Manchester City's Yaya Toure.

“Who doesn't dream of a player like Toure? He'd provide our club with something that we're currently short of, but his price and his salary are serious obstacles.

“Of course Mancini can help us with him. In the last winter transfer window, several important players considered joining us only by virtue of his presence, regardless of the money.

“Roberto is a magnet for the top players. He likes to take part in our summits and his knowledge about footballers is wide as the waters. Mancini is the heart of our engine.

“Of course, though, he did not anticipate the difficulties he is encountering. None of us did. But he made his choices and set up a forward-looking system.

“We all knew there would be risks. Maybe a more opportunistic approach would have gained us a few more points.”

Finally, the Inter director was asked about Walter Mazzarri, who was sacked in November 2014 in favour of Mancini.

“I think the environment weighed him down and made him lose balance. I think his potential was being capped. In the last few games he was no longer the old Mazzarri, he no longer stood up from the bench to yell out to his players.

“That's when I understood that he was having problems and that it was the moment to do something about it.”
