Milan CEO Marco Fassone reiterates Gennaro Gattuso isn’t a caretaker – “he’s the best solution, we’ll see in May”.

The former Rossoneri midfielder replaced Vincenzo Montella as Coach earlier today, despite a patchy record with FC Sion, Palermo, OFI Crete and Pisa.

“He’s not a caretaker, he’s the best solution at this point in time,” Fassone told TV8, echoing the words of sporting director Massimiliano Mirabelli.

“He knows what his role is and he’s accepted it with humility. He knows he has Milan’s first team in his hands, something very big.

“We’ll do our sums in May, it’s a fluid scenario. There are no caretakers.

“It was a solution evaluated in the past few weeks, not in the summer. The director made his evaluations and the final decision was taken this morning.

“I made some reflections overnight and spoke with the owners this morning.

“Montella? We’re grateful to him from both a personal and professional point of view, he did all he could to improve the squad.

“He worked and the team were in harmony with him, something didn’t work and in these cases there’s blame on all sides.

“The most important thing was to take a decision in good time, rather than waiting and hoping that things would improve.”

Will there be reinforcements in January, as the Diavolo push for a crucial Champions League place?

“The team is good, we built it with ambitions to make the Champions League, not be champions.

“We can perform better than we are right now, we haven’t even had an average of 1.5 points and we hoped it would be different.

“We’re convinced that with Gattuso the average will go up and we’ll return to what we had in mind at the start of the season.”
