Tavecchio stepped down from the presidency after Italy’s defeat to Sweden resulted in their first World Cup no-show for 60 years, although he was heavily criticised for delaying his departure by a week.

“I was struck by our failure to qualify for the World Cup, so I resigned,” he told Radio Sportiva.

“I’m convinced that there were many at San Siro who were hoping the Azzurri would go out as that was only way they could overthrow me.

“The national team begins with those who start in Italy. Right now the situation is confusing, but Mancini is an excellent Coach, although you can’t start winning again overnight.”
