Karim Benzema’s pressing proved to be deadly for Gigio Donnarumma and Eduard Mendy and fans on social media made comparisons between the two goalkeepers following the France striker’s hat-trick against Chelsea.
Both Donnarumma and Mendy were tricked by Benzema’s furious pressing in Real Madrid’s last two Champions League games. The Merengues star has now scored two consecutive hat-tricks in Champions League.
Donnarumma lost possession inside the box in the second leg of the Round of 16 at the Bernabeu in March, leading to Benzema’s first goal, which sparked the comeback of Carlo Ancelotti’s men against PSG. The France striker scored three more against Chelsea last night and his third one came in a similar fashion as he stole the ball from Mendy and former Roma defender Antonio Rudiger, putting it inside an empty net.
Donnarumma’s season has gone downhill since that error against Madrid. The Italy international is seen as one of the responsible for North Macedonia’s winner against the Azzurri in the World Cup play-offs semi-finals.
