A large number of Spezia fans have been left confused and furious after the club decided to change their badge.

The Aquilotti recently suffered relegation to Serie B, having lost their play-out match to Hellas Verona 3-1 last month.

After announcing the appointment of coach Massimiliano Alvini, Spezia decided to follow up with another change, keen to kickstart a new area at the club.

Spezia revealed their new badge yesterday. It features a white stylised eagle on top of the letters SC, with the club’s name written above.

The design didn’t land with a large number of Aquilotti fans, with many suggesting that the design resembled fascist iconography.

Some made jokes at the expense of the badge, with one writing: “’Then next season at the stadium there’ll only be 88 fans”.

Others took a more serious tone, with another commenting: “In a city like ours, a medal of valour, for the Resistance, we did not deserve this juxtaposition to a sad era, an episode that makes us denigrated throughout Italy.”

Badge redesigns rarely go down well with supporters, something that’s been seen at both Inter and Juventus in recent years. Atletico Madrid recently announced that they’ll return to the old badge, accepting the fans’ unhappiness with the new design.
