“I missed my family. I was in daily contact, but that couldn’t replace my desire to see her, to be there and have her close,” he told Il Secolo XIX.
“I spent more than two months in Genoa without seeing them. I dedicated myself to work on preventing further injuries and that did me good, given that I had started the season with a bit of physical problems.
“I remember hard moments and some longer days than others. I saw what was happening outside and morale was certainly not high.”
But the former Torino man looks forward to resume action and has vowed to help President Enrico Preziosi keep Genoa in the top tier.
“I’m really happy to return to old habits. I missed the pitch and my teammates, the fun in training and matches.
“Training on your own was a different experience and, in some ways, very difficult to keep up.
“The interruption came at a time when I was recovering. I used this period to improve my fitness after the ankle and quadriceps injuries that had held me back in recent months.
“Compared to my teammates, I have now filled the gap. I’m fine and I have a mad desire to return.
"I really want to help Genoa. I owe it to the President, the club, my coach and my teammates. I’m mentally charged.”
Genoa, who had won three out of their four last matches and currently sit 17th in Serie A, return to action against Parma on June 23.
