According to Il Corriere della Sera, Juventus midfielder Nicolò Fagioli has admitted he gambled on football matches, but not those of his current and former clubs.
Fagioli has been involved in an investigation by the Turin Prosecutor on alleged betting through illegal online platforms. It has led to a sporting investigation by the FIGC Prosecutor, who could ban Fagioli for up to three years if the 22-year-old is found guilty.
The report from Il Corriere della Sera says Fagioli has already been interrogated by Turin Prosecutor’s investigators, admitting to having gambled on football matches but not on those of his clubs.
Fagioli has only played for Juventus U23, Juventus and Cremonese at a professional level in his career.
Fagioli’s lawyers said on Wednesday that their client is “facing the situation with a sense of responsibility, with utmost transparency and collaboration with the sporting and civil justice authorities.”
Professional players, coaches and staff members are prohibited from gambling on official matches organised by FIGC, FIFA or UEFA, even through legal platforms.
According to Il Corriere della Sera, Fagioli’s lawyers could base their defence on their client’s ‘addiction to gambling’, claiming the midfielder was attracted by betting and poker since his time in the youth sector.
