Giacinto Facchetti’s son Gianfelice is against Milan and Inter‘s decision to demolish the Stadio Meazza and hints that an American group could buy the Nerazzurri.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reported this morning that the Milanese clubs have decided to demolish the Stadio Meazza in 2027-28.

Inter and Milan will soon present the project for ‘The Cathedral’, their new stadium built in the area of San Siro. It must go through a public debate which must aim at a more sustainable and greener environment and, for this reason, the Stadio Meazza will be demolished.

“It’s not the word ‘demolition’ that makes me upset, but the fact that not even a symbolic piece of the old stadium will remain,” Facchetti told Gazzetta’s printed edition.

“What hurts me the most is that they are just giving up on it without the idea of moving toward different paths, perhaps by keeping the stadium as it is or even continuing playing in it.

“I wonder why there wasn’t a serious debate on whether the stadium could be refitted and it’s surprising not to see that many fans would remain out if the two teams move to a smaller stadium.”

RedBird Capital Partners have recently completed Milan’s takeover for €1.2 billion, while Suning’s financial issues seem to have convinced Inter owners to listen to offers for the club.

“Americans have already acquired Milan and perhaps, the same will happen to Inter one day,” said Facchetti.

“Americans have taught us to dream big and now that they arrive, they want to do something smaller while, at the same time, people are showing the desire to participate and fill that pace [the Stadio Meazza].”

Inter director Alessandro Antonello stressed on Thursday that both Milan clubs need a new stadium to be competitive in Italy and Europe, while Ivan Gazidis said last month that neither club could afford to build a new stadium alone, so the next one will also be shared by Rossoneri and Nerazzurri.

  1. There is a magic about the place. You feel it when you walk into the stands. Will be a real shame to lose that.

  2. Many legendary sports stadiums have been demolished or have other uses over the years. Yankee Stadium, Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto and the Old Montreal Forum in Montreal for example. Times have changed and new beginning have to start to increase revenues so the clubs can afford to compete on the international stage again. Money talks and bull wakes mates!
