Former referee Massimo De Santis says Giacinto Facchetti didn’t ask for refereeing help but ‘neither did anyone else’.
De Santis was the only referee not to have his conviction overturned by the Supreme Court in last week’s Calciopoli ruling, and he spoke today at a libel trial.
Facchetti’s son Gianfelice is seeking damages from disgraced former Juventus director Luciano Moggi, who claimed that his father had told a referee to make sure Inter won a Coppa Italia tie with Cagliari.
“Facchetti called me on the phone, as the other directors [of other clubs] did,” De Santis told the court, as reported by Tuttosport.
“However, he never asked me to let him win a game, and neither did anyone else.
“I was the only referee of 40 whose calls were intercepted to be accused of being part of the gang linked to Moggi, although I had calls with everyone but the leadership of Juventus.”
De Santis was not the referee involved in the game which Moggi alleged was fixed, as the game was handled by Paolo Bertini.
This case is not related to the verdict last week, or to Juventus’ ongoing claim for civil damages, and will only decide whether or not Moggi made defamatory statements about Facchetti.
The prosecutor is seeking €10,000 in damages from Moggi, and a verdict is expected by July 15.
