Cesc Fabregas explains why he preferred Como in Serie B to MLS, being convinced by Dennis Wise, his close call with Milan and ‘one of the most important challenges of my career.’

The 35-year-old Spain international was a free agent after experiences at Barcelona, Arsenal, Chelsea and AS Monaco, deciding to start again with a side newly-promoted to Serie B.

It’s more than just a way to see out his playing career, as both Fabregas and his agent have also bought shares in the club.

He was convinced by his former Chelsea teammate Dennis Wise, who is currently the CEO at Como.

“I came here to play the best way and win as many games as possible. This is my priority, and if I felt that was no longer the case, I would hang up my boots,” said Fabregas in his presentation press conference.

“I want to take Como where they deserve to be, in Serie A. I decided to come here for many reasons. I wanted a project that would give me enthusiasm, I was not interested in the money. Wise was the most convincing and I see a long-term future for this club.

“I think this is one of the most important challenges of my career.”

Fabregas signed a two-year contract with Como, who the player assures represented “a better project than MLS offers.”

It is his first Italian football experience, although he admits there was a close call in the past. “When I was 29 years old and at my peak, I had three years left on my contract with Chelsea and Milan wanted me. I knew that I could make Conte change his mind and I am very proud of taking that opportunity. Conte pushed me beyond my limits and I will always thank him for that.”
