Former referee Gianpaolo Calvarese remembered a revealing moment with Inter striker Lautaro Martinez, who showed his professionalism and maturity on the pitch.

The Argentinian striker has grown into one of the most impactful strikers in Europe over the last five years with the Nerazzurri, proving himself a hardworking and talented centre forward who can act as a leader on the pitch.

Lautaro is a key reason why Inter have flown to the top of the Serie A table this season, scoring 12 goals and providing two assists across his 12 appearances. In the Champions League, he scored decisive goals against Real Sociedad and RB Salzburg.

Speaking on Radio Kiss Kiss, Calvarese was asked which player was kindest when protesting against a decision he made on the pitch.

“Perhaps during Inter vs Fiorentina (in September 2020, ed.), I signalled for a penalty and was called back to VAR. I revoked the decision, went back onto the pitch and Lautaro came towards me.

“I thought about the fact that I had to manage the protests, but he told me that he agreed and that I brought him luck since he always scored.

“He is a champion, out of this world, and he made me laugh.”

Inter went on to beat Fiorentina in that match in September 2020, taking home all three points in a seven-goal thriller that ended 4-3 in San Siro. Lautaro did score in that game, netting soon after Calvarese’s decision.
