Giuseppe Wilson, the captain of Lazio’s 1973-74 title winning team, has sadly died today aged 76.

The former Biancocelesti defender spent 11 years of his career with the Roman club, making 296 Serie A appearances and playing a key role in their first ever Scudetto success. His performances with Lazio earnt him a call-up to the 1974 World Cup with Italy, where he made two appearances.

As reported by ANSA, Wilson suffered a stroke and passed away during the night at his home. He was one of the most recognised figures of Lazio’s first Scudetto alongside striker Giorgio Chinaglia, who sadly passed away back in 2012.

Wilson remained an active Lazio fan for the rest of his life and regularly commented on the progress of the Biancocelesti, being a fan of previous coach Simone Inzaghi and his work in Rome.

The former Lazio defender was born in Darlington, England in October 1945 and he moved back to Italy only six months later due to his mother’s unhappiness with the cold English weather. He also made 138 league appearances for Internapoli in the four years prior to joining the Biancocelesti.
