Former Juventus goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar has confirmed that he is no longer in the intensive care unit after suffering a brain haemorrhage last week.

The Ajax CEO was rushed to hospital in Croatia, where he had been on holiday with his family, with a diagnosis confirming that he had suffered a cerebral haemorrhage.

Ajax confirmed on Saturday that Van der Sar had been transferred to the intensive care unit of a hospital in the Netherlands, where it was reported that he was in a stable, communicative condition.

In a post on his social media channels, Van der Sar confirmed on Tuesday evening that he had been dispatched from the ICU and hopes to return home from hospital next week.

Alongside a photograph with his wife Annemarie, Van der Sar wrote on twitter: “First of all, we want to thank everyone for all the great and supportive messages. I’m happy to share that I’m no longer in the intensive care unit.

“However, I’m still in hospital. I hope to go home next week and take the next step in my recovery!”

During his playing career, Van der Sar spent two years with Juventus from 1999 to 2001, making 88 appearances across all competitions.

He returned to Ajax after calling it a day on his playing career with Manchester United in 2011, before being handed several promotions, culminating in an appointment as the club’s CEO in 2016, where he has remained since.
