The 28-year-old was considered a bright prospect in English football when he broke through with Everton in the late 2000s.
He then earned a big-money move to Manchester City in 2012, but injuries ravaged his spell with the English champions.
Since then, he has played for Sunderland and Blackburn Rovers further down the League pyramid with little success.
The Lupi have brought in one English player this season – defender Chris Smaling from Manchester United.
Other names would include ex-Udinese man Valon Behrami, who left FC Sion earlier in October, and Iceland international Emil Hallfredsson.
Hallfredsson is vastly experienced in Serie A through his time with Reggina, Verona and Udinese and is described as the “most ready” to start playing.
