Former Atalanta forward Josip Ilicic has returned to Slovenia and signed for NK Maribor, returning home after more than a decade in Italy.

The 34-year-old forward ended a five-year spell with Atalanta in August, terminating his contract as he considered his next move after a difficult few years. Ilicic was a fan favourite in Bergamo but struggled with personal issues during the final period of his time with the club, leaving the club and fans worried.

As announced today, Ilicic has returned to Slovenia and signed a three-year contract with Maribor, a club he was briefly attached to before he joined Palermo in August 2010.

During his time with Atalanta, the Slovenian forward made 173 appearances across all competitions, scoring 60 goals and providing 44 assists.

Maribor currently sit 4th in the Slovenian PrvaLiga, picking up 17 points in 11 games. Ilicic will be hoping to enjoy his time on the pitch again and move past the issues that plagued him over the last few years.
